temporary teaching certificate florida

by admin on November 16, 2008

Do you have to have a bachelors degree in the subject you want to teach in Florida?

or do you just have to have a bachelors degree and passed a subject area examination to get your temporary certificate?

I am senior in college and its way too late to change my major (im a psychology major right now). I'm thinking that I want to be a math teacher in the future though. I have taken a bunch of math classes (around 24 credits worth) and I've always been good at math. I may be able to add an education minor before I graduate. What would I have to do to get my temporary certificate. I have looked online, but I'm not sure if the subject area exams are only for already certified teachers who want to add a subject or not.

P.S. dont ask me why I majored in psychology. all i can say is that its hard figuring out what you want to do with your life when you start college at 17 years old.

The state of Florida prefers you have a B. Ed. Degree in the subject you plan to teach. However, not having that but having a B. Degree you can obtain a Florida Temporary Certificate. You must fill out an application for the subject you wish to teach and send it to the Bureau of Educator Certification who will evaluate your application ONLY for the subject for which you are applying. They will determine if you are eligible.
