teaching two year olds colors
Can I have some suggestions for teaching a student who is mentally retarded, please?

The child is nine years old and have been employed for help with math. I am a private teacher in Jamaica, and no resources here. We had two sessions that went well. I see that needs a lot of patience, lots of repetition, in the hands, the colors. He does not know his numbers, but not much more and the writing is very bad. I'd appreciate any suggestions or pointers. Thank you.

The most important when teaching children with mental disabilities is consistency - lots and lots of repetition. Another thing that may help is the model, system, verification approach. This is basically what is called. First, the model of the task (if only in writing or adding a number) - that shows the student how. Many times, also spoke out loud, explaining why you are doing as they are. Then ask the student (walk through of the process or help with a problem - by giving advice if needed) Finally, check for student understanding of the task or activity have to complete the task / Business on its own. Often, with students with mental disabilities, and you have to model the system and check back often to see exactly what he means and what no. Another thing you can consider is a task analysis - breaking the task or activity fall into it from smaller components - and teaching each components at once - this will help in writing and mathematics.
