teaching subtraction regrouping

by admin on May 5, 2008

What is the best method or approach to teach Subtractions to 9 years old kids?

Hard for them to grab the meaning of regrouping….Thanks

I've found the best way is to use pieces of paper. Have a 10 x 10 grid of little squares, some 1 x 10 columns of the same little squares, and some little squares by themselves. Arrange the squares, columns, and big grids to represent the problem, and when it comes time to borrow and regroup, get out the scissors and cut the "tens" columns apart to get "ones", and cut the "hundreds" grid into "tens" columns. Kids usually like cutting them apart. Move them around and regroup, and it becomes very intuitive.

Good luck!
