With Unit Studies like FIAR or KONOS, what kind of learning to read program do they use?
I'm wanting to do Unit Studies with my 4yr old next year when she is 5yrs. She is ADHD & very much a Kinesthetic learner & I was wondering what kind of Phonics/reading program they use to teach children how to read?
If memory serves correct, KONOS does not use a specific reading program; they recommend books to read (activities as well) that relate to the area of study. Therefore, you'll probably have to find supplemental material to help your dd read in the way that is best for her.
There are quite a few Kinesthetic geared reading programs available for purchase online. However, you might find it helpful to connect with other people who are homeschooling Kinesthetic learners first and find out what programs they're using. I read an article online (see link below) a few minutes ago cautioning parents seeking Kinesthetic reading curricula to not fall prey to catchphrases like "great for Kinesthetic learners" because often they just have "cut and paste" projects.
Our children (11 & 14) have very different learning styles but they both loved the computer CDs 'Reader Rabbit' & 'Sesame Street' when they were young like your dd. They thought they were just helping the characters get from point 'A' to point 'B'--little did they realize that they were learning to read in the process. If your dd enjoys video games, you may find computer reading games a very useful tool.
Best of luck to you.
