teaching focus to children
What traditions do you have for Christmas, which focus on Christ?

I'm sick of Christmas shopping. I want to teach my children the true meaning of Christmas, and bring fun to it. Not only presents, but truly celebrate the birth of Christ. I have some things I do (birthday cake and stuff) but I'm always looking for more ideas.

One thing we do is on Christmas morning before opening gifts, my husband reads the Christmas story of the birth of Christ as we gather around the living room. Throughout the Christmas season, we read children's books with them about their birth and have a manger / nativity our children can play and play and act out the story on their own. One more thing is do not put much emphasis on Santa and gifts. We are not "anti-Santa" as some are. We let our children will visit the mall if you want, but we never say who has come form and he is watching. We focus Christ is always the reason for the season instead of Santa being the focal point. In our family, Santa Claus is the same as Mickey Mouse is ....... a fictional character our children love to visit and a hug, but I know he is ultimately only one man in a suit and never has been in our house ....... not Mickey! :-)
