Advice on becoming a high school teacher in CA?
I'm a California resident but attending university in Washington state. My goal is to teach Earth or Environmental Science at the high school level. My university offers a Ba in Education of secondary Earth sciences, but has an accompanying teaching credential. My question is:
If I do the Ba in Ed program w/ credential, can I teach in California? Or is the WA credential only good to teach in Wa?
Also, should I just consider getting a Ba in Geology and then getting a teaching credential from a CA university?
Most states offer reciprocity meaning that you can transfer your certification. In addition, most states (including California) have alternative certification programs. If you're 100% sure that you want to teach, then you can study education and then just apply to transfer. If you think you might change your mind or are more interested in another area of study, then do that now and apply for a certification program later. You can get certified while you're teaching so it won't require you to be in school longer.
