teaching clauses and complex sentences

Is this a complex sentence? o_O?

"I had an eating disorder and what I ate didn't matter"

I'm really confused. The "and" seems to connect two different and indepedant clauses. But when I look closely, "what I ate" "didn't matter" is a noun clause acting as a subject. I was taught that noun clauses are always in complex sentences. Err. help?

Yes this is a complex sentence because both parts of the sentence can be seperated into two seperate sentences and both are linked by the word "and"
