teaching babies to read early
Raising Intelligence?

For parents of newborns or those anticipating, have you all or will you do anything *special* to increase/encourage your little one's intelligence, and what age were they?

I am reading the books and watching the videos by author Glenn Doman who pioneered the field of child brain development and is the founder of The Institutes for the Achievement of Human Potential. I am so excited to begin teaching my baby.

Honestly, I've always known HOW to teach my baby. Before I discovered these books, I spoke to my own mother about introducing writing to my baby at an early, 6 months she is now, age. So although this book has interesting facts, it is mostly motivation for me. I recommend them.

I allowed him to have plenty of things to explore, I spoke to him with normal words, and read to him A LOT. When my son was 18 mos old, he figured out that letters represented sounds and started asking me what each "said". He then memorized them and started piecing together words by the time he was 2.

Other than just allowing him to have whatever resources kept him challenged, I never followed any specific "method". When he asked for more, I gave him more. As he states it, I "always expected him to have a brain." :) (He's now several years above grade level in most subjects and doing well.)

One thing I would caution, though - if you introduce something to your baby and he/she doesn't latch onto it, allow yourself to put it away for a bit and bring it out again down the road. My son, for example, really never liked to color...he's 10 and still doesn't. Although I absolutely loved to color when I was little (still do, lol), I didn't push it but allowed him to develop fine motor skills in other ways.

Allow your baby to discover, to explore (safely), and to learn according to his/her "bent". Try out different things, but stick with what works - not necessarily what "experts" say should work. Your baby is an individual and will absolutely amaze you as he/she develops!

It sounds like you've got great resources; just remember to leave an opening for "life to happen". Speaking from experience, that can be the hardest part!
