teaching 6th grade writing

Texas teachers-Anyone have advice on the Cscope language arts curriculum for 6th grade?
I am teaching 6th grade language arts for the first time and will use the Cscope language arts curriculum. A different teacher will teach all of the reading. So, I figured I would teach writing, grammar, and spelling along with oral speaking ect.. In looking at this curriculum, I notice that it lacks grammar and is not writing intensive and there is no spelling. Basically, it is like another reading program. How do you teach this required curriculum and still have time to fill in the gaps (grammar, writing)? My class periods will be 60 minutes long.
I've yet to find any one program that covers all that needs to be taught!
I would find out if your district has any supplemental materials to teach these subjects and find someone else in your district who has your job and ask them for help. Many districts have on line curricula so that what you do will align with the TEKS. If all else fails, look at the TEKS and decide what it is you need to teach and find out a way to support what you've got. Good luck!
