Does the SIMS reinforce or break down gender stereotypes?

We are actually playing the SIMS as one of our sociology classes to learn about family and decision making and consequences. A lot of the girls in our class love it and have played it before and find it really addictive. The guys find it a bit boring LOL and struggle to see the point - like how do you win? What do you think?

Plus do you think it reinforces or breaks down gender stereotypes? Is it a good thing to play in a class setting or not? Can you learn anything from it?

In my opinion, not at all. The actions of the Sims are in the hands of the player. I can't think of anything in the game that's not available to either of the sexes. Male Sims can even get pregnant (through alien abduction).

The thing that makes this game unique is that it's a game about life, rather than a game about death. It is also an ongoing game (a game without an end). Some players are not accustomed to either of these things and find it strange. Other players (like me) find these two features highly appealing!

P.S. Just a note to "Dannuele's niece is cute". Your Sim doesn't need any logic skills to get abducted. Also, women don't come back impregnated when abducted. Here's a link to some more info if you're interested:

Sociology Essay

Sociology essay deals with different issues related to social science. The importance of this subject is increasing day by day because of the changing social structure and mixing of different societies because of the advancement of communication systems.

Writing a sociology essay is not very easy. The characteristics of variety, complexity, indefiniteness and mobility etc. distinguish social phenomena from physical phenomena. Some of the characteristics of social phenomena are as follows-

1)      Complexity- Social phenomena are very much complex. Society is constituted by social relationships. Social relationships manifest in the mutual behavior of human beings. Human behavior is complex and vivid. This complexity makes it study more difficult than that of physical phenomena.  It has been rightly pointed out by G.A.Lundberg,” Perhaps the most frequently urged obstacle to a true science of human group behavior is the complexity of its subject matter.” In fact, innumerable factors influence human relations and behavior, of which the most important are geographical, economic, social, psychological, political, religious and cultural. Besides, so many still unknown factors also influence human behavior. All this makes human behavior very much varied and complex. It again makes it difficult to control and determine. While the factors determining physical phenomena may be easily controlled, it is not so in the case of social phenomena. As the factors determining social phenomena are not few and definite, it is difficult to find out cause effect relationship every where. Again, the factors influencing social phenomena are neither stable nor universal. For example, the economic factor does not carry the same influence every where. Therefore, as compared to physical phenomena, the social phenomena are very much complex. How ever, that does not mean that scientific method can’t be used in the field of social phenomena. In fact, complexity is a relative term. A subject matter is complex so long as our means are insufficient to probe it. How ever, if the means and methods are sufficiently developed, the same subject matter no more remains as much complex. This is particularly true about social phenomena. As means and methods in the field of social sciences develop, social phenomena will also become relatively simple and subject to scientific study.

2)      Variety- While physical phenomena may be classified into solid, liquid and gas, no such simple classification of social phenomena is possible. Social phenomena exhibit a wide variety of traits for example, economic, religious, political and cultural social phenomena exhibit a wide variety. This variety makes social phenomena very much complex, as has been already described earlier.

3)      Dynamism- Social phenomena are dynamic. Physical phenomena do not change so much. Social phenomena, on the other hand, change very fast. For example, fashion may change several times during the course of a single fashion very itself. Group behavior, again, is constantly changing. Behavior on the individual plans can not be easily apprehended. Sometimes one may observe abrupt and sudden changes in individual and social behavior. There fore, as compared to physical phenomena, social phenomena are unstable and dynamic.
