GARY OLDMAN - THE SCARLET LETTER (1995)

How to make a good thesis for my essay on the novel Scarlet Letter?

Here is the prompt " Choose a character from THE SCARLET LETTER write an essay in which you (a) briefly describe the standard of the fictional society in which the character exists and (b) show how the character is affected by and respond to these standards. In your essay do not merely summarize the plot.

I chose to do my essay on Hester Prynne

well... the obvious choice would be hester. perhaps the priest would be interesting? oh well... hester's the best bet.

ok...u want to have an interesting introduction...

but ur main thesis should point out the body in which ur essay will be addressing.

Introduction: Puritans constituted a distinct social group within the Church of England who regarded themselves as the godly, and who held out little hope for their neighbours who remained attached to "popish superstitions" and worldliness (wikipedia.. u may want to change it to ur own words, etc). Hester Prynne was pressed against the high, unattainable standards that puritan society infringed on her. She was affected, and branded as a sinner, by being forced to wear a scarlett A, being shunned by neighbors, and (something else).

then in ur body, each paragraph should explain each topic; being forced to wear the A, being shunned by neighbors (give examples), and the last one u can think of.

good luck!
