Teachers, I need ideas!!?
I am coordinating summer school at my site, but I may have to also fill in for a teacher whose certification isn't complete. I could end up taking the group anywhere from 2 days to 14, depending on whether her cert comes through or not. So I'm in a difficult position. I can't have any grandiose plans for an exciting unit that I may only get to teach for 2 days, but at the same time, I may very well have them the whole time. The group is eleven 4th, 5th, and 6th graders. we're expected to teach reading, writing, and math, but we're also under much more lenient rules regarding our curriculum than we are during the regular school year. In other words, we can have some fun, and teach things we don't normally teach. Field trips are allowed, but this is a rural area with not a lot to do. Suggestions? What would you do?
I am not a teacher by choice, when I went to college there was surplus and salaries were low (and are still low). I wanted to be a teacher but could not see raising a family on a teachers pay. I looked at things that helped my children. Cards game are good for basic math. Comic books can teach a child to read and for my children extended into books. One thing that would help children learn organization would be to have a daily outside session collecting weather data, temperature, wind speed, pressure, relative humidity, and keep a daily log. You could have each child grow a plant, some kind of flower that blooms quickly. This should help them learn to take care of things. Good Luck
