ideas for teaching regrouping
What is the best way to teach subtraction by regrouping? What manipulatives work best? Any motivation ideas?

I am working on a lesson plan for regrouping (or ungrouping or borrowing as some textbooks refer to it as) and I was looking for some input and ideas. Let me know if you have any suggestions.

I've almost always seen it done with a "money" idea. You're allowed to have $1, $10, and $100. Give one of them $500 (in hundreds) and ask him/her to give another classmate $172. This will require subtraction with regrouping: 500 - 172.

The regrouping can be in the form of a "bank" - you. The student can trade one of his $100s for $10s, and one of those $10s for $1s.
